Even though the future of Bradley Wiggins at Team Sky still hasn’t been officially confirmed, nothing else that extending a contract with the outfit is expected following a long and intense negotiations with sir Dave Brailsford. The only different option mentioned within last two months was forming a development squad with the multiple Olympic golden medalist as their leader. According to CyclingNews, the ultimate solution worked out by Wiggins and British squad manager will be a combination of both.
Wiggins has closely cooperated with Team Sky on finding the best solution for final years of his career as a professional cyclist, since he announced that he will focus almost entirely on the track program to support his ambitions regarding 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. The 34-year old rider made it absolutely clear that becoming the most decorated British Olympian will be his last objective before hanging up his wheels, and no one doubts that he will do his utmost to make it happen.
In such circumstances, it seems impossible to see him return to Grand Tour events as his significantly reduced appearances in road races will be chosen to support his track ambitions, perhaps with his new fascination – Paris-Roubaix – being a notable exception.
Team Sky manager was reportedly positive on giving Wiggins such amount of freedom, and according to CyclingNews the former Tour de France winner will eventually extend his deal with the British squad, becoming a leader of a new track-oriented development team in the same time.
The new outfit, which is yet to be made official, will be created to extend a British domination in track racing with the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio as their first important objective. Reportedly, both Brailsford and British Cycling technical director Shane Sutton, as well as Wiggins’ management company XIX Entertainment all will be involved in the project.
For now, besides Wiggins only former world champion Andy Tennant is expected to become a part of the new team, but without any doubts more rumors on that matter will spread in days to come.
