Welcome to Yorkshire (WTY) recorded a loss of £1 million on the Tour de France Grand Départ in 2014. According to the organizers, it was a great success with many fans along the roads. But after the audit carried out by KPMG, the finances are not going well. Indeed, they announced a loss of 1 million pounds (£1,031,515) of which 700,000 pounds stem from of unsold merchandise.
But a spokeman added that the finance will be balanced : "As of the end of August 2015 Welcome to Yorkshire is on track to deliver a modest surplus for the 2015/16 financial year. WTY is a not for profit organisation. Everything we do is purely to make Yorkshire bigger and better. Any surplus that we make is reinvested into our work promoting Yorkshire."
This year WYT organized the first Tour de Yorkshire. They wanted to expand this race from three days to four but were turned down by British Cycling. The race, set up as a legacy for the Grand Départ and backed by ASO, had its inaugural edition this May and also has plans to make the step from 2.1 classification to WorldTour.
