The 2014 Vuelta a Espana may not end in its usual fashion in the Spanish capital of Madrid. According to the newspaper La Voz de Galicia, organizers Unipublic are considering the possibility of ending the race with a evening time trial in the Galician city of Compostela.
The 2013 edition of the Vuelta a Espana came to a conclusion in its tradition manner when Michael Matthews sprinted to a win on the Paseo de Castellana in the centre of Madrid but the scene for the final stage may be different in 2014. According to the Galician newspaper La Voz de Galicia, organizers Unipublic are considering a completely different venue for the final day of next year's edition of the Spanish grand tour.
In the past, the Vuelta has finished outside the Spanish capital with Bilbao and San Sebastian both being recurring finishing cities but since 1994, the race has ended in Madrid. The final stage has often been a sprint stage but a time trial has featured on the final day in the past. That last happened in a dramatic 2002 edition of the race when Aitor Gonzalez disposed Roberto Heras in the 25km race against the clock that ended the race.
Next year, Unipublic may deviate completely from their usual pattern as the Galician newspaper reports that they are considering the option of ending the race with a time trial in the Galician city of Compostela. To add to the excitement, the stage will be contested in the evening.
Furthermore, Galicia is likely to host an additional three stages and one of them is expected to have an impact on the GC as it will finish atop the Puerto de Ancares. The climb last featured on the course in 2012 when Joaquim Rodriguez beat Alberto Contador in an exciting duel.
Galicia hosted the start of this year's Vuelta which kicked off with a team time trial. Next year's race will start in Jerez in the Southern part of the country.
