Even though this season’s Tour de France has been concluded only five weeks ago, race organizers are working hard on finalizing the route for the upcoming 102nd edition of la Grande Boucle and, as always, a lot of romours are circulating before its official presentation in October.
According to the French radio station D!Ci, the 2015 edition of the Tour de France, due to kick off in Utrecht on 4 July, will include the highest ever mountaintop finish on the Col de la Bonette-Restefond in the southern Alps.
According to the report from the radio station, the peloton should reach southern Alps on July 20, with a stage set to start in Digne-les-Bains – what has been already confirmed by the city hall, and very likely finish on the Bonette-Restefond, at 2802 meters above the sea level. The highest summit finish in Tour de France history to date took place on the Galibier (2645 m) in 2011.
The cited report suggests that hotels in the region have already been block booked on those dates, but race organizers still need to convince the Mercantour national park authorities to let the peloton pass through, as they apparently are openly reluctant.
The radio station also suggested that the highest ever mountaintop finish will be followed by a stage including one of the iconic Tour de France climbs, either L’Alpe d’Huez or Mont Ventoux.
