The Tour of Norway ended Sunday with a wet and challenging finish along the Eggemoen airstrip. The 174-kilometer stage began under sunny skies with chilly temperatures in Fla, but as the riders headed towards Eggemoen, a steady rain started. The day’s eight-man break didn’t escape until 30 km into the race and were kept at a manageable gap of 2:50. Once the race reached the first of three challenging 12-km finishing circuits, the break attacked itself. Amund Jansen (Team Joker), Vegard Breen (Lotto-Soudal) and Marius Andre Hafsäs (Team FixIT.no) escaped and were soon joined by Andreas Vangstad (Team Sparebanken Sør). With two kilometers remaining, Vangstad attacked on the final climb and the bold moved paid off. The local Norwegian rider soloed to the win while Jesper Hansen (Tinoff-Saxo) held on to take the overall race win.
“I think for many riders, including us, today was just a battle of survival,” Team Novo Nordisk’s Stephen Clancy said. “For the third straight day, the extreme weather conditions made it another day to remember. At the end, I was pretty empty. I would say the previous two stages were harder, but today’s finishing circuit was unrelenting.”
Andreas Vangstad (Team Sparebanken Sør) took the win 11 seconds ahead of Frederik Strand Galta (Team Coop-OsterHus) with Alexander Kristoff (Team Katusha) rounding out the podium.
Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team, returns to racing at the two-day Tour of Estonia when it begins on Friday in Tallinn.
