Stage two winner Michael Matthews has settled for second place on the final day of the Tour of Alberta, edged out for the win in the stage six sprint.

The closing city circuit stage in Edmondson failed to break up the last day of racing so also saw Adam Yates maintain second overall and the best young rider competition.

Nikias Arndt (Giant-Alpecin) took the final stage win from the bunch kick whilst Bauke Mollema (Trek Factory Racing) wrapped up the overall Tour.

“We went in with a two-pronged strategy today,” sport director Dave McPartlandsaid.

“We all knew it was a big ask to change the overall seedings but we wanted to try. Adam had to get away on the hill of the final lap but it really wasn’t hard enough to break things up.

“We also had Michael ready for the sprint; which was the more likely of the two scenarios. We used a few guys to cover some late moves in the last half of the final lap but in the end Michael couldn’t go with the speed of the winner.”

ORICA-GreenEDGE leave the 2015 Tour of Alberta with one stage win, second overall, two second places and the green and white jerseys.

“We have had a good week here,” McPartland said. “We didn’t walk away with the overall win but we still managed second with Adam, had a stage win with Michael and the time trial boys got another good hit out before the world championships.”
