Fernando Gaviria has become the most coveted rider for the WorldTour team after he managed to beat Mark Cavendish twice in the Tour de San Luis. The 20-year-old was the revelation of the Argentinean race and Ag2r-La Mondiale have already shown interest in the Colombian.
Artūras Kasputis, sports director of the French team, met with Gaviria at the hotel in San Luis, according to L’Equipe, and made "a concrete offer" for a minimum of two years. In 2015, the Colombian will ride for the amateur Colombia-Coldeportes team and wants to stay in his home country for another year. In 2016, he expected to move to Europe as he is reportedly in contact with 5 WorldTour teams.
Het Nieuwsblad reports that Etixx-QuickStep has also shown interest as sports director Davide Bramati was spotted in the Colombian’s hotel. However, Bramati denies the reports and claims to only have been there to watch the Juventus football match.
Gaviria (1.80m and 70 kilos) was double junior world champion on the track in 2012. In 2013, he won the gold medal on the road at the Bolivarian Games. In 2014, he won the U23 race at the Panamerican Games and won the omnium at the World Cup in London. He also did the Tour de l’Avenir in support of his winning teammate Miguel Angel Lopez, and was just one point from winning the points competition. He was 20th at the U23 Worlds in Ponferrada.
In San Luis, he surprised by beating Cavendish twice and taking second in the final stage. Next month he will ride the Track World Championships.
