Following the announcement of the demise of the Sojasun team, Alexis Vuillermoz is the latest rider to find a new team. The talented 25-year old climber has signed a two-year contract with Ag2r-La Mondiale.
The demise of the Sojasun team has left many riders without a contract for the coming season and many riders have already decided to either retire or step down to continental level. A few select riders have managed to save their career at the highest level and the latest to join that select few is Alexis Vuillermoz.
The 25-year-old is a mountain bike specialist who is a former French champion in the U19 and U23 categories. Prior to his season, he decided to focus on a road career and signed a contract with the Sojasun team.
His first season as a professional was a successful one. He finished 2nd on a stage and 5th overall in the 2.2 Rhone-Alpes Isere Tour, 11th in the Klasika Primavera and 14th in the mountainous stage races Route du Sud and Tour de l'Ain. However, his standout performances came when he got the chance in WorldTour races as he was selected for both Paris-Nice and the Tour de France. In both races, he rode aggressively and showed his potential as a climber.
While most of his Sojasun teammates have been unable to secure contracts with a ProTeam or a professional continental level, Vuillermoz' career has been given a lifeline by the Ag2r-La Mondiale team whose management is convinced that the talented Frenchman deserves another chance at the highest level. He is the second Sojasun rider to be signed by the French ProTeam and will be joined by teammate and sprinter Maxime Daniel on his new squad.
In addition to Daniel and Vuillermoz, Anthony Delaplace (Bretagne), Jimmy Engoulvent (Europcar), Jonathan Hivert (Belkin), Fabrice Jeandesboz (Europcar), Christophe Laborie (Bretagne), Cyril Lemoine (Cofidis) and Julien Simon (Cofidis) are the only Sojasun riders who have currently signed a professional contract for the 2014 season.
