Eduard Vorganov was one of the six riders that stayed in the front for most of the day. Eduard took seven bonification seconds and is now second in the general classification, three seconds behind stage winner Sam Bennett (Bora-Argos 18).

Stage one was the longest (221 km) stage of the Bayern Rundfahrt in Germany. The six riders with Vorganov had a maximum advantage of 5 minutes but on the Tännesberg and the Hessenreuther, the two major climbs of the day, the leading group split. Three guys, still with Vorganov, stayed in the front.

In the mean time Giant-Alpecin and Cofidis chased in the peloton but Vorganov, Rodolfo Torres (Colombia) and Jonas Koch (Rad-Net Rose) struggled till 18 km from the finish when they were also caught. In Waldsassen Irish rider Sam Bennett won the mass sprint ahead of Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) and John Degenkolb (Giant-Alpecin). Rudi Selig became the best Katusha’s performer with 13th place.

"Eduard rode a very smart race. He was attentive immediately after the start when some riders tried to get away. On the climbs he was very strong. Moreover, he picked three times the bonus seconds (two times second, one time first), important for the overall classification. With the group of riders we have here, all can take their personal chances. They can take advantage of this situation and Eduard did that very well. Also Egor Silin and Tiago Machado were active on the last lap of the local circuit, jumping at everything that was moving. When we saw that a mass sprint was inevitable, we tried to pilot Rudi Selig to the front. Rudi did his best but lost Degenkolb's wheel in the last 500 meters. More opportunities will follow for him in his home country," said team director José Azevedo.
