Etixx - Quick-Step riders Julian Alaphilippe and Rigoberto Uran finished 8th and 10th respectively in 219 km Clasica Ciclista San Sebastian, out of a chase group that formed after attacks launched on the final climb of the day: Category 2 Bordako Tontorra (2.5km, 9% average gradient, max ramps 20%).
Adam Yates won solo by 15" over the group behind him Philippe Gilbert (BMC Racing Team) was 2nd, and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) finished 3rd.
Pieter Serry was in a previous lead group of about nine riders. Serry even tried to launch a solo attack out of that group. However, by the time the race was over the top of the final ascent to descend into the flat finale, a new group of riders was up the road trying to decide the stage, with Yates alone in the lead. Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing Team) was the first to go solo on that climb, but an incident with a motorbike caused a crash in a key moment.
The original breakaway of eight riders was down to Manuele Boaro (Tinkoff-Saxo) trying to stay ahead solo, but the race was brought back together on the final ascent Category 2 Alto de Arkale.
