The Belgian riders participating in the national championships cyclocross this weekend can expect lots of mud and water. The course was already designed as a typical tough Belgian course with mud and many passages where the riders will have to walk. But with all the rain that already fell and that is expected in the coming the days, the riders might spent more on their feet than on their bike. Retired former Belgian and World Champion and now team director of Vastgoedservice – Golden Palace Cycling Team, shared his opinions about the course with Het Nieuwsblad.
“I have never seen anything like this”, Albert said. “It’s so wet. It is going to be extremely tough. And it will only get worse in the coming days. It is a course I would have loved riding myself.”
Albert already had the big favorite in his team with Wout van Aert. But with these extreme conditions, many feel that it is only a matter of with how many minutes the young star is going to win. Albert, however, stays careful.
“It is definitely a course that suits van Aert. But this course doesn’t guarantee success. It is going to be very tough.”
