The 2016 Vuelta a Espana (August 20 to September 11) will return to Alicante for a time trial in Marina Alta, between Jávea (Xàbia) and Calpe (Calp).
Eduardo Dolon, vice president and deputy of Tourism of the Provincial Council of Alicante, has announced that "the province will host a time trial from Javea that will be decisive for the final classification and it will have a course that will pass through the towns of El Poble Nou de Benitachell, Teulada -Moraira, Benissa and Calp, where the stage will end," he said in a statement puclished by EFE.
In 2015, the area hosted a stage between Alicante and Torrevieja which finished on the Cumbre del Sol climb. Tom Dumoulin surprisingly beat Chris Froome and Joaquim Rodriguez in the final meters.
"We are looking at how to adapt the course to bring it closer to the citizens, so that all the fans and followers can enjoy this festival of sport," Dolon said last week after a meeting with officials of Unipublic, organizer of the Spanish race, and representatives of different towns.
The 2016 Vuelta will start in Ourense and Galicia will host the first five stages. Yesterday it came out that the third stage will finish on the steep Ezaro climb which includes 29% sections.
