Following the breakdown of the negotiations with Euskaltel, F1 driver Fernando Alonso has been working hard to create a cycling team for the 2015 season. According to his manager Luis Garcia Abad, the sponsors have been found and the team will be presented at the 2014 Tour de France.
Fernando Alonso drew much attention when he rumoured entrance in the cycling world was linked to a possible acquisition of the Euskaltel team license which would save the Basque team at the last minute. Those negotiations ultimately broke down but Alonso was quick to point out that he still wanted to create a team for the 2015 season.
Since then, the F1 driver and his manager Luis Garcia Abad have been working hard to establish the team. The manager has now confirmed that the team will be presented at next year's Tour de France and that deals with two major sponsors have been signed.
"The sponsors have been found and the team will make its debut in 2015," he told Gazzetta dello Sport.
When the negotiations with Euskaltel team were still ongoing, Alonso's personal sponsor Banco Santander was rumoured to also back the cycling team but that will not be the case.
“It’s better to keep the F1 business and cycling on separate plains,” Garcia Abad said. “We’re not talking about any companies currently involved in cycling. We’re turning to companies who are interested in innovation and with an ecological soul. Some agreements have already been signed.”
Alberto Contador has been linked with the new team but the Spaniard has made it clear that he will fulfil his contract with the Saxo-TInkoff team which runs until 2015. Gazzetta dello Sport speculated that Filippo Pozzato and Ivan Basso could both join the team but Garcia Abad made it clear that “at the moment, we can’t sign any contracts with riders.”
Garcia Abad confirmed that the team would try to introduce some of the best aspects of formula one to the cycling world.
“That means technology, research, marketing, promotion and the use of new instruments such as telemetry, as well as setting up our own medical centre,” he said. “The intention is to do something new and avoid the problem of doping.”
