The Trek Factory Racing DS Kim Andersen is happy about the way his team has started this edition of the Tour de France. He told CyclingQuotes.com he is very impressed by the size of the crowd, but sometimes it was a little bit too much for the riders, who struggled to find space on the roads.
It was a problem for the riders that so many people stood in the roadside along the route yesterday in England. It wasn’t only on the hills, but also in the cities. Andersen said it is nice to have so much support, but he is divided though.
”I must say there were unbelievably many spectators along the route. It was absolutely outstanding to see so many people. Sometimes the riders weren’t able to ride the race. It wasn’t only when it went uphill but also when the riders rode downhill and especially in the cities. It is of course nice to have so much support, so you are a bit divided,” Kim Andersen said after the stage.
The attack from Fabian Cancellara at the end of the stage was planned and a part of the team tactics before the stage started. The team also wanted to go after the KOM shirt and Andersen is very hapy with the fact that Jens Voigt ended up wearing it after the stage.
“It was our plan from the start that Fabian [Cancellara] should attack at the end of the stage. We definitely achieved what we wanted today. We wanted to go after the KOM shirt and that it was Jens [Voigt] who got it was very nice. If Fabian had the legs at the end he was supposed to go for the win. So all in all it was fine,” Andersen said.
But the DS doesn’t see the team defending the shirt on the stage of tomorrow. But all in all he is happy with the way they have started off.
“I think the KOM shirt will suit Jens very well. I don’t think he can defend it tomorrow [today], but we will try to go again so that you can see we are here. I think we have started off very well,” Andersen finishes.
