Fans of cycling aren’t the only ones expressing concern about Andy Schleck and his lack of racing days. Yesterday the President of the Luxembourgian Cycling Federation, Jean Regenwetter, voiced his growing alarm over the rider’s current situation.

It’s been almost a year since Andy Schleck completed a race. Recently, he cancelled his participation in the Tour du Haut Var and rescheduled his next outing. According to his reorganized plans Schleck is now set to take part in Italian race Grand Premio Cittá di Camaiore on February 28.

RadioShack-Leopard cited “breathing problems” as the reason for Schleck’s withdrawal, but subsequently sports director Luca Guercilena raised doubts about the rider’s motivation. Regenwetter shares the anxiety.

“The competition doesn’t sleep,” he told Luxembourg newspaper Wort. “Contador, Froome and Rodriguez have all shown more than decent form. Schleck, on the contrary, has not. That’s never a good sign. However, while there is life there is hope. It’s still not too late for Andy to reverse the situation.”

Regenwetter also alludes to Frank Schleck’s doping sentence and subsequent ban.

“The ban imposed upon his brother hasn’t improved Andy’s situation. But, frankly, Andy should have been training prior to that. Unless he swiftly resolves his problems, he can write off the 2013 season.”
