After a breakaway in the opening stage, the young Simone Andreetta (a neopro born in 1993) did it again in Stage 6 of Tour de Langkawi: 96.6km from Maran to Karak covered with a high speed by the riders.
After the official start, the Bardiani rider pulled away wih three riders and so created the early breakaway. Despite a good pace, the peloton led by the sprint teams was always close behind and the gap was always around 1:30 minutes.
Andreetta was clearly the best in front, winning all the three intermediate sprints and then made a solo move inside the last 10km when the peloton was about to catch them. His final effort was good but he was caught with 5km to go after a break of about 90km.
The stage ended with a classic bunch sprint won again by leader Caleb Ewan (Orica – GreenEdge) who outsprinted Marezcko (Southeast) and Sutton (SKY).
In the general classification, Ewan (OGE) is still the leader but it will probably all be decided tomorrow in the queen stage that features the mountain finish of Fraser’s Hill.
”Andreetta was very good and determined to find the breakway and then to win the intermediate sprints," sports director Mirko Rossato said. "He also tried a solo move in the finale when the peloton was coming really close.
"Today it was an easy stage, we waited for tomorrow's hardest stage. We have good chance with Chirico who is improving day by day. The final climb looks not as steep as Genting Highlands so we could expect a select group in front and then a possible sprint. If it will happen Luca is really good in this kind of finish. He can also make a big jump forward in the general classification."
