Philippe Gilbert (BMC Racing Team) won his third Amstel Gold Race, leaving only the crumbs for his opponents.  IAM Cycling was on the attack from the first kilometers thanks to Pirmin Lang who took part with nine other riders in an escape that lasted for over 200 kilometers.  The second year pro wanted to give the best birthday gift to his wife, who is home with their young daughter, and so he even persevered to finish the race in 109th place, 10 minutes behind the winner. 

 

“I am exhausted after a long day, but am still happy with my performance.  I was tasked to join the early break, and I managed to make it after less than 10 kilometers.  We in the escape found a good harmony among us and were able to build a substantial lead. 

 

"But the repetition of the climbs began to take its toll and we conceded our advantage in the face of the chasing teams for the favorites.  There was nothing to do against the strength of the big guns.”

 

Directeur sportif Kjell Carlström was keen to highlight the athletic performance of Pirmin Lang while addressing the setbacks many riders on the team faced. 

 

“Bad luck continues to walk hand in hand with us.  We had more than our share of punctures, and then even our car had trouble with its suspension.  Fortunately, the day was not completely disappointing with Pirmin’s breakaway, and a strong ride by Stefan Denifl which netted him 36th place, though he was not in a great position once the final climb started. 

 

"All the guys tried to help Stefan knowing that Sylvain Chavanel could not be anywhere near his best after having been so sick with bronchitis.  But I am confident that we will have what it takes for the upcoming Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège.”
