After a great disappointment in the Belgian opening weekend, Lotto Belisol continued their series of failures on home soil when they failed to make an impact in the sprint in yesterday's Le Samyn. Kenny Dehaes regretted his poor result but Greg Henderson was happy to play an active role after returning from knee surgery.
Lotto Belisol had a very bad Belgian openining weekend when Jurgen Roelandts and André Greipel failed to deliver the expected results in the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and the Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne. Yesterday the team was out for revenge when Kenny Dehaes led the team in the Wallonian season opener, Le Samyn.
Again it ended as a failure for the ambitious Belgians as Dehaes could only managed 36th in the sprint. The sprinter who had finished 4th one year earlier, was frustrated by another disappointing performance.
"The attack from the Katusha rider [Vladimir Isaychev] with two kilometres to go destroyed our plans for the sprint," Dehaes told Het Nieuwsblad. "Instead of preparing the sprint, I had to take part in the chase. Jonas Vangenechten was a good support but I was looking for coordination in the sprint."
The positive outcome of the day was the performance of Greg Henderson who recently came back from knee surgery. The Kiwi played a active role in the finale as he made it into a 10-rider escape inside the final 10km and even tried a late solo move.
"I surprised myself," he said. "Things are really improving after my knee surgery."
Lotto Belisol gets another chance to shine on home soil when the Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen kicks off on Friday.
