One day after his agonizing defeat in stage 4, Albert Timmer was again in the mix in a Tour of Britain stage. The Dutchman stayed with the best on the final climb before sprinting to 11th.
Albert Timmer has put in another strong performance on stage five of the Tour of Britain finishing just outside the top ten placings on the day in 11th. The result comes a day after Timmer just missed out on a stage win by a matter of metres, so he was up for it again today.
The team set Timmer up in position near the front of the peloton at the base of the day’s final climb, a two kilometre hill in the final five kilometres that split the peloton, but it was a breakaway that survived to take the stage with Timmer coming over the line in the first part of the peloton a handful of seconds later.
Coach Marc Reef said after the stage: “It was not ideal today as we wanted to be in the break but it didn’t work out and so we focused on getting Albert up there for the climb at the end. He did a strong ride but it wasn’t the fight for the top places.
“The guys worked well to get him in position at the end and after that they rolled in steady behind. We will take a good look at the parcours of tomorrow’s stage and work out what suits us best there.”
Tom Veelers added: “It has been a good race so far but the finishes have been a quite hard for me. Today we supported Albert to get into a good position on the last hill. This worked well but then there was some chaos in his group with 500m to go and he lost a few places.
“All is going well though, I’m feeling good, we’ve got nice weather and I’m looking forward to our next opportunities here.”
