One day after his fifth place finish in the opening stage, Marko Kump again put his sprinting skills to goo use when he took sixth in the bunch sprint on the second day of the Tour de Wallonie. His Tinkoff-Saxo team is now looking forward to the upcoming stages where hillier terrain is in store.
Another highly undulating day was ahead of the peloton that took on the 193 kilometer long second stage of Tour de Wallonie. Five categorized climbs and three intermediate sprints were on the program.
Four riders, Sebastian Lander (BMC), Ludwig De Winter (Color Code-Biowanze), Julien Stassen (Wallonie-Bruxelles) and Pieter Jacobs (Tosport Vlaanderen-Baloise) made up the first breakaway of the stage but along the way, the break split up and eventually only Sebastian Lander (BMC) and Pieter Jacobs (Tosport Vlaanderen-Baloise) were in the front of the race.
With 20 kilometers to go, they were reeled back in and the stage was decideed in a bunch sprint, where Giacomo Nizzolo (TREK) was the fastest rider while Marko Kump crossed the finish line in sixth position.
“The stage was very similar to yesterday’s events but today we were obstructed in the run-in due to a crash. However, we managed to put Marko (Kump) in a good position and he came across the line 6th. Tomorrow, we go south to the Ardennes and a different terrain. The boys are ready for a fight," says DS, Lars Michaelsen.
