Team Colombia is interested in signing Igor Anton, and the rider is interested in the move as well, the Basque rider says in an interview on Radio Popular.
"I cannot expect much more [than signing with Team Colombia]," says the former Euskaltel-Euskadi rider. "What I prefer, is a team that is growing and has a good calendar. " adds Anton.
Team Colombia did have a good calendar in 2013, obtaining wildcard in several world tour races including Giro d'Italia and Il Lombardia. As a team from Spanish speaking country, they attended a lot of Spanish races as well, including Vuelta Castilla y Leon and Vuelta Burgos. With the addition of Anton and previously rumored Samuel Sanchez, they'll likely gather a Vuelta wildcard as well, as well as other Spanish world tour races.
Although Igor Anton certainly is a capable and useful rider for most world tour teams, he found himself in serious trouble now, due to the decline of spanish cycling as well as bad luck. He was in connection with Omega Pharma-Quick Step, before the short-lived Alonso proposal put that on hold. Then OPQS signed de Gendt which put the Belgian-based team on UCI-limit 30 riders, and the Basque rider is considering to step down to Pro Continental level now.
Anton had his best seasons in 2010 and 2011, leading the 2010 Vuelta before forced to retire due to a crash, and then won the Zoncolan stage in Giro 2011, beating a superb form Contador, and the Bilbao stage in Vuelta 2011 as well. Last season the Basque rider had some useful results, with a 2nd in Miguel Indurain and 8th in Fleche Wallonne.
Team Colombia had a busy offseason, with leader Atapuma left for BMC, and highly touted Chaves depart for Orica Green-Edge. Other than showing interest in Sanchez and Anton, the team recruited several local riders, including Rubiano from Androni.
