Even though young Nikias Arndt didn’t make it to the Giant-Shimano roster for the Giro d’Italia, build exclusively around sprinters Marcel Kittel and Luka Mezgec, the 22-year old German agrees with team’s decision as he personally finds the Italian grand tour too demanding for his current capabilities. Instead, he pointed out to the Bayern-Rundfahrt as his major objective of the first part of the 2014 season, but didn’t completely rule out his return to the Vuelta a Espana this year.

“I didn’t want to participate,” Arndt told radsport-news about team’s decision not to take him to the Giro d’Italia, “I’m still young and this race is too tough and hectic for me.”

“I would like to ride the Giro, but it would happen too early at the moment.”

While Arndt assessed this year’s Giro d’Italia edition too demanding, he expressed his will to participate in the Spanish grand tour for a second consecutive season following his debut in 2013.

“This is a great race,” Arndt admitted, after he managed to claim two top five results in last year’s Vualta a Espana edition, including highly coveted by sprinters ultimate stage ending in Madrid.

The 22-year old German also revealed that he set the Bayern-Rundfahrt his major objective for the first part of the 2014 season.

“I would like to win a stage, even if it won’t be easy.”

He is expected to ride Criterium du Dauphine and national championships in July before having a break from racing, while his race schedule for August is yet to be determined.

“My programme for August is not clear yet – there are many possibilities,” Arndt concluded.
