Sometimes it is not the result that is the main source for motivation for a bike rider. Sprinter Nikias Arndt headed into the Bayern Rundfahrt time trial with the goal of not being caught by Fabian Cancellara and this motivated him to do surprisingly well.
Nikias Arndt has finished the stage four individual time trial at Bayern Rundfahrt in 16th place, fastest rider over the 25.5km course for Team Giant-Shimano.
Arndt finished with a time of 31’56″, coming home just 1’08 slower than stage winner Geraint Thomas (Team Sky). Lawson Craddock was next home for the team in 32nd place, another 28 seconds back.
“I was better than expected today in the time trial but I didn’t get a chance to see the course beforehand which would have made a difference,” said Arndt after the stage.
“I have been feeling good this week and went out today with firstly the target of not being caught by Cancellara who started behind me. I managed this and paced myself quite well on the course that had a few hills, some technical bits as well as power sections too.
“It is great to be racing here in Germany and this is one of my favourite races with a great atmosphere from the German fans. The weather hasn’t been great but I am still happy to be here. Tomorrow is another opportunity for myself and the team. It usually ends up in a bunch sprint in Nürnberg but we will see how it pans out.”
