In a few days, Vincenzo Nibali and Fabio Aru will be back in action. The two Astana riders have been busy at a high-altitude traning camp on Mount Teide to prepare for the next events.
Tomorrow Nibali will be check the cobble stage of the Tour de France and he will return to racing at the Amstel Gold Race to start the Ardennes triptyck that also includesFleche Wallonne and Liege - Bastogne - Liege. Next week Aru will be at the start of the Giro del Trentino and he will also ride Liege to finalize his preparations for the Giro d'Italia.
Their trainer Paolo Slongo is satisfied with there work.
"We had intense days with hard workouts," he told Gazzetta dello Sport. "We did three triple sessions: a first session of five and a half hours, one that lasted between 6 and a half and 7 hours and a third one of three and half hours to four hours where we also used the time trial bike. The fourth day was a rest day. Each triple session included around 16 hours of training and 11000m of altitude. If you mulitply by three, you get a block of important work."
The coach stressed that Aru has focused on the time trial bike to get ready for the test in Valdobbiadene which is likely to have a big impact on the overall outcome of the Giro. Compared to 2014, the Sardinian has made remarkable progress and this is certainly an encouraging sign.
It was different for Nibali who used the work on Teide to find tranquility and focus after a winter full of non-cycling events. The Sicilian, according to Slongo, has "worked hard" and is "in good condition" to target Liege and the Tour de Romandie that takes place immediately after the classics.
