With top five places claimed in both Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana general classifications, Fabio Aru emerges as one of the most promising Grand Tour contenders of his generation. The 24-year old Astana rider is yet to prove strengths in one day-races, but remains optimistic about his own and Italian team’s chances ahead of his debut in the World Championship road race on Sunday.

"I came from the Vuelta with a nice condition and I am ready to give the race my best," Aru told TuttoBici.

Italian national team coach is yet to announce the final nine-man selection for the road race, but Aru is apparently certain about making the final cut. The 24-year old rider was reluctant to reveal what role he is going to play in the event, claiming that he needs to do some reconnaissance first.

"We'll talk with [national coach Davide] Cassani," he explained. "For now I prefer not to say too much, not at least until Thursday when I can see the percorso for myself."

Young Astana rider was equally reluctant to reveal team tactics for the race, but shared his optimism about the final outcome of the Sunday’s event.

"We are a good team led by a coach who is sending us all his enthusiasm," he added. "And I am convinced that we can do really well."

Vincenzo Nibali was the best placed Italian in the World Championship road race last year, finishing just outside the podium.
