The 69th edition of the Italian semi-classic Coppa Agostoni covered almost 200 kilometers around the city of Lissone. Being the first autumn classic in Italy, the race is the opening to the so-called Trittico Lombardia this year - a series of three one-day races in Lombardy.
The field was together for the first 20 kilometers. Shortly thereafter, a group of eight riders, including Lukas Pöstlberger of BORA – ARGON 18, attacked. The peloton was satisfied with the race situation and allowed a gap of more than four minutes. Pöstlberger was very active, but he crashed on rain-covered streets in a dangerous corner. The 23-year-old Austrian had to change his bike due to the crash and thus he fell back to the field. After half of the race the peloton started the chase and only 15 kilometers later the lead was significantly reduced to a single minute. However, the high speed led to a clear selection in the field and only 50 riders took the started 70 kilometers together. 50 kilometers before the finish line all attackers were caught and immediately there was an attack of the favourites. With Davide Rebellin (CCC) and Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) two riders were able to keep a slight lead over the chasing group to the finish line. Gregor Mühlberger and Emanuel Buchmann finished in that first chasing group.
"We wanted to be represented in the breakaway and Lukas did so very well. It rained all day, the streets were slippery and he then crashed in a corner. The others worked for Gregor and Patrick [Konrad] in the field, which also worked quite well. Many crashes happened on the slippery roads and also Patrick was unfortunately involved, so that he wasn’t available in the finale. In the end, Gregor and Emanuel still were part of the chasing group. Emanuel felt very good after his long break from racing, but he’s not a sprinter. And Gregor wasn’t in a position for a result. Even if the result is missing, the team did a good race", Sport Director Enrico Poitschke summarizes the race.
