Carlos Barbero (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) won the silver medal in the professional category and his teammate Carlos Jiménez became the champion in the Elite category.
Barbero finished just behind Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) after a great performance by the Caja Rural-Seguros RGA team. The squad made a bid for victory from afar with Miguel Ángel Benito and Héctor Sáez and when they were neutralised Pello Bilbao looked for his opportunity with Izaguirre, but the peloton did not allow them to consolidate the escape. Finally they controlled the stage by leading the peloton. Valverde was faster than Barbero in the sprint and was triumphant in a day of extreme heat.
Carlos Jiménez, a rider from the amateur team, finished in 4th place and as the first rider in the Elite category.
Carlos Barbero had the following to say about a race affected by “the extreme heat. The team did very well, leading in the last two laps, first with Pello and in the day’s escape with Benito and Héctor. The team did a phenomenal job, almost perfect, it was only thwarted by Valverde, and we all know how good he is, last year the UCI ranking said he was the best in the world, so there’s not much more to say. It has been a good weekend for everyone, with good outcomes in every category for the team and that’s wonderful for all of us”.
