Having crashed in yesterday's stage, Romain Bardet survived today's crash-marred stage 7 of the Tour de France without hitting the deck. For the Frenchman, these early days are more treacherous than the upcoming mountain stages.
Like many other GC riders, Romain Bardet has not come through the first week of the Tour de France completely unscathed as he went down in a crash in yesterday's stage. Today, however, he safely negotiated the tricky stage 7 and can now head into the mountain stages with a top 10 place in the overall standings.
The Frenchman is pleased to have the first 7 stages out of the way.
"The many crashes show that the peloton was really tense today, and I was close to crashing again," he said. "Everyone thinks he has a chance to win this kind of stage and that's why it'a the jungle inside the pack. It was certainly the last opportunity to win this week for many riders and they fought with all their energy.
"I think that all contenders for the overall standings are more afraid of a stressful stage as today than a mountain stage. It takes a lot of commitment and even if you ride well throughout the day, no one is safe from a crash or a split in the final kilometers, danger is everywhere. Tomorrow, another race begins in the Vosges."
