After Nicola Ruffoni finished outside the time limit, Bardiani was left without a pure sprinter in the Giro d'Italia and so they had to invent something in the final stage to Trieste. The team tried to ride aggressively and regretted that the rain arrived 5 minutes too late as it would have made it easier to deny the sprinters.
Bardiani have had a very successful Giro d'Italia that included three stage wins but the team refused to rest on their laurels. Going into the final stage, the team had a plan to continue their aggressive riding style, hoping to deny the sprinters in Trieste.
Stefano Pirazzi was the first to kick into action when he bridged across to an earlier 5-rider break and in the finale Francesco Bongiorno also tried to accelerate on the small climb on the circuit. However, the peloton kept everything under control and it all came down to the expected bunch sprint.
To secure points for the special points classification for teams, the team decided to let Enrico Battaglin, Sonny Colbrelli and Marco Canola do the sprint and they all finished in the top 15. That was enough for the small team to secure second behind Omega Pharma-Quick Step in the competition.
5 minutes after the stage had ended, it started to rain and the team regretted that it had not started a bit sooner as a wet circuit would have made it easier to surprise the sprinters.
”Also today in the last stage we tried to avoid the bunch sprint by making some attacks on the only climb on the final circuit," sports director Mirko Rossato said. "I was hoping for rain but it arrived five minutes after the peloton had reached the finish. Anyway, our guys made another good performance and the decision to make the bunch sprint with three riders has been important to score fundamental points for teams classification."
