Having shown great form in the mountain stages, Warren Barguil found himself in less favourable terrain in today's flat time trial of the Tour de Pologne. As expected, the Frenchman suffered and dropped to 14th in the overall standings.
Nikias Arndt finished just 48 seconds down over the course of the 25km individual time trial to round out the 2014 Tour of Poland, taking 16th. Teammate Warren Barguil went into the stage in seventh place overall but eventually finished the day in 75th position at over two minutes behind the stage winner.
Barguil drops down to 14th overall while the overall win goes to Rafal Majka (Saxo Tinkoff), and the stage to Kristof Vandewalle (Trek Factory Racing).
It may have been a slightly disappointing day by some of the riders’ standards but they can take solace from knowing that the team has been at a high level throughout the Tour of Poland, challenging on every road stage and narrowly missing out on stage wins on more than one occasion.
The 25km course was more favourable to the bigger, powerful specialists with long straight flat stretches and not too many technicalities. Barguil suffered slightly from this but also did not have a good ride within himself.
He said after the stage: “Not at all on a good day, far from the time trial at Bayern [Rundfahrt].” But he was also realistic about the overall performance, adding: “Poland has been a good one I arrived without much condition but I am leaving here with a lot of positives.”
Team coach Addy Engels said: “Nikias was really strong today – he was hoping for a top ten but the result is still a good one. Tobias [Ludvigsson] wasn’t where he expected to be and Warren also said he didn’t have a good day but the course wasn’t one to suit him either.
“Overall I am very happy with the past week. We have challenged in the sprints and also the tougher stages. It was a shame that we didn’t get the stage win we were after but it is a good restart by the guys after time off and in racing. It looks promising for the races to come.”
