Manager Jon Odriozola insists. Euskadi Basque Country-Murias Taldea is not a continental team but a team with bigger ambitions. His enthusiasm and stubbornness have prompted the Basque Government t0 support the project that wants to pick up the baton left by Euskaltel-Euskadi and the goal is to bring Basque cycling back to the top. Now he expects that public support will translate into new business investment.
Murias stepped forward in late 2014, after a plan for a new Professional Continental team collapsed at the last moment. This week the team got a new sponsor, a new jersey and the new tame. "Basque cycling has to be much better and this is another step to reach the point where it should be. Right now we are making a project in which we not only have to consider the sporting aspects. We want to explain exactly what we are and the team name Euskadi Basque Country Murias will explain that. From there we have to keep growing," Odriozola told BiciCiclismo .
Now he wants to build the foundation of a team that can move up to the pro continental ranks in 2017.
"This year people did not realize the merit that a newborn team has participated in important races with the best teams, especially in France. From there we have to take steps. The idea is that we believe Euskadi-Murias should be in the Tour of the Basque Country. You have to work, work, work, always with the feet on the ground. Clearly, there are many options to do things," he said.
"There are other companies and brands which could give us possibilities, but we are working towards 2017. The reality is that we want to have a future project. There are people who will engage in this project. It looks good and we want to work quietly, considering that Euskadi Basque Country-Murias is an all Basque team," he added.
Odriozola won't just spend time in the office. He will be active on the road. "I am responsible for sports and now I will focus on that. We have to focus on out fitness level and grow to compete in the races we want to ride. If we go to the Vuelta a Esana, we need to work hard with the young riders," he said.
He has finalized a roster of 15 riders.
"They have the opportunity to be professional riders and will keep alive the enthusiasm for Basque cycling. At the same time, we will open a way to excite the youngsters, the kids who see a possibility. Everone will have his opportunities. Gari (Bravo), Beñat (Txoperena), Aritz (Bagüés) will have to show themselves," he said.
