Double Giro d'Italia stage winner Enrico Battaglin has had a hard time finding his best legs in the second half of the season. Today he finally had better sensations when he sprinted to fourth in the Coppa Agostoni.
Enrico Battaglin was expected to perform strongly in the Tour of Britain which had lots of stages that suited his characteristics perfectly. However, the Italian never found his best legs and left the race empty-handed.
Today he showed signs of progress when he finished fourth in the Coppa Agostoni.
”I had some bad luck in the final sprint because I’m sure the podium was possible," he said. "When I started my sprint I was closed by another rider. I had to stop, losing speed and then restart. I came back really fast but not enough to pass Bole or Ponzi and get a spot on the podium. Anyway, I finally had good sensations and I want to do better tomorrow in Tre Valli Varesine."
”The guys made a solid race," sports director Mirko Rossato said. "I’m proud of their performance. Yesterday Coppa Bernocchi didn’t go well but today we raced better. We saw a strong Piechele that was in the early break and then had the energy to sprint and take 6th place. Bongiorno showed that he was probably the best on the climbs and finally Battaglin's 4th place can be the start of a great end of the season.
"Now we look forward to the upcoming Tre Valli Varesine. We bring four riders in really good shape: Battaglin, Bongiorno, Colbrelli and Zardini. For the latter two there will be the chance to the get a ticket for the Road World Championships in Ponferrada if they deliver a great performance."
