Today was a very good day for the Belgian team Wanty Groupe Gobert. The team had a man in the 9-rider breakaway in Tour des Fjords and it was Wesley Kreder. But it wasn’t the Dutchman who ended up with the success. It was another Wanty rider, Jerome Baugnies, who surprised everybody and took the win.
He won the stage ahead of Magnus Cort Nielsen from the Danish team Cult Energy Vital Water and Sondre Holst Enger.
“The last kilometers were very difficult today. It went up and down and the small roads made it a tough stage- But in the last two kilometres I was alone. It was my only chance of winning,” said Baugnies, who also added that he didn’t feel well in the first part of the stage.
“Kristoff and Cannondale attacked too early. With two kilometres to go the peloton lost pace and then I gave it everything I had,” he told TV2 Norway.
It is the second win for Jerome Baugnies this year, as he won the second stage La Tropicale Amissa Bongo.
