After the successful hour record attempts by Jens Voigt and Matthias Brändle, Sporza journalist Ruben Van Gucht decided to give it a try. After a few weeks of preparation, he covered 42.315km in an hour.
Belgian Sporza journalist Ruben Van Gucht was tired after he had made an Hour Record Attempt today. "Maybe I will try again next year. With additional preparation, I can target 45kph."
Ruben Van Gucht has averaged 42.315kph in his hour record attempt.
"It was tough," Van Gucht told Sporza. "But I am of course used to this kind of heavy physical activity." (Van Gucht is an experienced marathon runner, red).
"According to [fellow Sporza journalist] Karl Vannieuwkerke, I have to put on my running shoes again. Anything below 45kph was not acceptable to him," Van Gucht jokes
"Of course 42.315kph is not bad but more was possible. Especially if I could have prepared myself for a longer time and could gauge my effort better. After the race, I could still do 10 laps. But you do not want to ride too fast because you risk coming to a standstill.
What went through his head during the hour-long effort.
"I counted down the minutes and listened to the music of DJ Zohra. But I was mainly focused on the lines on the track. It was crucial to follow the correct line.
"Whether I will once again make an Hour Record Attempt? Maybe next year. With a little extra preparation, I can target 45 kph."
