With a team made up almost entirely of sprinters, Belkin only had survival on their mind in yesterday's queen stage of the Tour of Turkey. Having got safely through the day, they plan to support young Jetse Bol in yesterday's hilly stage.
The Belkin Pro Cycling TEAM sprint train headed into the mountains yesterday during the third stage of the Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey. Without a climber in the ranks, it was all about survival for Michiel Elijzen's men.
“Everyone arrived at the finish within the time limit and without any damage,” said the satisfied Sports Director. “Of course, the men are tired, it was a tough day, but everyone tackled the climbs successfully.”
The stage was won by Cofidis’ Rein Taaramäe. Jetse Bol finished 50th and was the best Belkin Pro Cycling TEAM rider of the day.
“Right from the start, the race exploded,” stated Elijzen. “Jetse was able to hang on for a long time and did well by starting the final climb with the first group.”
Bol will get another chance today, together with Nick van der Lijke. Elijzen thinks the hilly stage from Fethiye to Marmaris suits the duo.
“It’s a hard stage but not as hard as today’s. Hopefully, Jetse and Nick can stay with the first group until the line and bag a result. Both have a strong final kick.”
Van der Lijke is a first year pro. Elijzen is pleased with the 22-year-old Dutchman’s development.
“Nick is doing well. He does what he has to do. He didn’t record any big results yet, but that’s difficult as a neo pro. He’s a good guy and works hard. If he keeps this up, he’s going to make some big steps this year. He deserves a chance tomorrow.”
