While Belkin will stay on as main sponsor of the eponymous WorldTour team, the management of the squad is planning to bring in additional co-sponsors for select races. Sponsors may have their logo added to the jersey for events where they have a special interest in gaining some publicity.
One year ago, the Belkin team rode under the Blanco banner and started the season with great uncertainty. After the loss of Rabobank as main sponsor, the team was only guaranteed the needed funding for the 2013 season and needed to attract the attention of a new backer in the first part of the year,
After starting the season with all guns blazing, the team signed a deal with Belkin who took over the role of main sponsor from the Tour de France onwards. This has guaranteed the future of the team but the management is still looking for additional funding.
This has prompted the team to take a new initiative where it will have rotating co-sponsors throughout the season.
"It will be possible to sponsor the team for one race only, or for a period of time," commercial manager Mark van de Camp told Wielerrevue. "For example, if an Australian company wants to advertise during Tour Down Under only, this is possible."
The UCI rules state that the jersey's design cannot be changed for the duration of a calendar year, with the teams having the option of designing a special jersey for one race each season. However, the Belkin management has discussed their new initiative with the international federation and is in full compliance with the rules.
"We discussed this with the UCI," Van de Camp stated. "It's allowed to change logos throughout the season. We are now talking with several parties who are interested for the races in the USA, or the Tour de France for example. Belkin will remain on the jersey but another major sponsor will be added."
In general, the team is very satisfied with its kit design and doesn't plan any major changes for the coming season.
"There won't be any spectacular changes to the team kit next year," Van de Camp said. "The design stays the same, we'll only add some logos. Our jersey was the best recognizable one in the peloton last year. Belkin also requested not to change it. This year we'll keep it like this. For 2015 we'll change the design."
Belkin will start its season on January 22 at the Tour Down Under where it aims to defend the title won last year by Tom-Jelte Slagter who has since departed for the Garmin-Sharp team.
