The fifth stage of Tour of Britain ended in a group sprint. 15 riders were at the front when they crossed the finish line and one of them was winner Sam Bennett from An Post Chainreaction.
The Irishman Sam Bennett won his 3rd victory of the season when he crossed the finish line in front of former Polish champion Michal Golas from Omega Pharma Quick-Step and Swiss Martin Elmiger from IAM Cycling.
With the stage win Bennett also moves in the lead of the Chain Reaction Cycles Points Jersey, with only one point down to Martin Elmiger and Jack Bauer.
The Irishman improved his runner-up position from stage 2 were he was beaten by german MTN-Qhubeka rider Gerald Ciolek. On the 1st stage, Bennett finished second last over 7 minutes after and wasn’t able to participate in the sprint.
"It was a real hard fight coming into the finish but I knew if I hung on up the climb that I would recuperate quickly enough for the sprint and I just hung in.”
"It was a bit of a gamble going into the last corner – I went a bit wide – but I had enough acceleration to take the win,” Bennett said to The Guardian.
