Carlos Betancur (1989) will begin a new phase of his career with the Movistar Team next year. The Colombian is happy to join the "world number one team" and hopes to offer his best.
Betancur was third in the Fleche Wallonne, fourth in Liege and fifth in the Giro d'Italia in 2013 and last year he won Paris-Nice. But that was his last big result with AG2R La Mondiale and this August he left the French team after finishing 20th Giro d'Italia. As an amateur and U23 rider he won the Girobio in 2010.
Now he wants to get back on track in the Movistar Team that has announced an agreement for two seasons, 2016 and 2017. "I am happy to belong to the world number one team, and I think with someone like Eusebio Unzue, who knows my characteristics, I can do big things for myself and Movistar," he says in an interview on the website of the Colombian Cycling Federation .
"I have to learn a lot and so when I had the chance to go to Movistar I did not think twice. The team knew it was where I needed to be because there are many talents," he adds.
He only looks ahead. "I had some problems with AG2R and this made it more difficult to demonstrate the kind of rider I am. But now with Movistar doing a good job, we will demonstrate the kind of rider I am. I think everything is going to improve a lot in my life," he says.
Betancur is the fourth Colombian of the Spanish squad which already has Nairo Quintana, his brother Dayer and Winner Anacona on the roster. "Having Nairo in the team will be a warranty, because today he is the best young rider in stage races and younger. And Valverde is a person I've admired all my life. I think he is the most complete rider in the world,” he says.
