Just as the inaugural Abu Dhabi Tour attracted some of cycling’s biggest names, the UCI’s first Cycling Gala, which takes place after tomorrow’s stage, has also attracted some names, with Chris Froome and Nairo Quintana attending despite not racing in the Gulf state.
The UCI will award prizes to winners of the biggest races, the overall WorldTour winner, newly crowned World champs and Hour Record holders.
Joining Froome and Quintana are Valverde, Sagan, Aru and Nibali, who are racing in Abu Dhabi, as well as Rodriguez.
“From shoulder to shoulder sprints to the finish line to courageous solo break-away moves, the riders have kept us on the edge of our seats throughout the year. The UCI Cycling Gala is our way of thanking and rewarding them for their amazing performances. I am thrilled that the Abu Dhabi Sports Council and the United Arab Emirates Cycling Federation have undertaken to host this gala in conjunction with their new Abu Dhabi Tour,” UCI President Brian Cookson said.
