Yesterday was a good day for the Belgian rider Gaetan Bille as he rode to victory on the prologue of Volta a Portugal. The 1st stage of the race ended in a sprint, which was won by Spaniard Vicente Garcia and Bille finished 13th.
The bunch sprint was a perfect result for the Verandas Willems rider, who thereby will keep the yellow jersey for tomorrow’s stage. The Belgian had this reaction after the stage:
”It was a goal to keep the yellow jersey. It was not easy to control the race because it was a route with a lot of uphill and downhill. But my team was strong so many thanks to my teammates. I still have one day left in the yellow jersey,” Bille told RTP.
When asked by the reporter about his opportunities to keep the yellow jersey after tomorrow’s stage, Bille was not that optimistic. The peloton will tackle the 1st category climb Serra do Larouco in the uphill finish. Not the usual terrain for Bille.
“It is not good for me. The finish is uphill. My team will not control the race. A 1st category climb is too much for me to keep it,” he finished.
