Michael Rasmussen: "Bjarne knew about everything."
In his coming book "Gul Feber" (yellow fever) Michael Rasmussen reveals that Bjarne Riis knew everything about a widespread doping-abuse on CSC-Tiscali.
Danish tabloid paper B.T. has been granted privileges to read select parts of the book, and they reveal a number of Rasmussen’s startling confessions.
Amongst others, it is revealed that Rasmussen, together with teammate Nicki Sørensen, bought EPO on Mallorca, and that Sørensen later buried it in his own backyard, out of fear that someone would tip off Danish anti-doping officials.
Michael Rasmussen reveals that Bjarne Riis knew all about his own doping abuse, and that it was carried out with the assistance of CSC-Tiscali’s doctors. Doping was not enforced but rather "part of the package." Rasmussen will allegedly reveal the names of a number of Danish riders, who doped while being a part of Riis’ team.
An editor of B.T., Jacob Staehelin, states that “Michael Rasmussen does not appear (in the book) as a remorseful man. He would do it again had he the chance. From his point of view he has competed on even terms against his rivals.”
Chief editor Olav Skaaning Andersen remarked that "Michael Rasmussen writes about an episode, during the Giro d'Italia, where Riis enters a hotelroom, and sees a team doctor injecting Rasmussen with doping."
According to B.T. Rasmussen continues that "Tyler had just had a shot of synacthen, and he offered the same to me. I wanted to do it. Bjarne had no objections. It was a 225km long mountain stage, which was waiting. The doctor gave me 0.2ml in my shoulder."
Rasmussen’s revelations are especially indicative right now, as Anti-Doping Denmark (ADD) is currently investigating the possibility of opening new cases against Bjarne Riis.
Rasmussens book is to be published monday, and it will without a doubt affect teams, riders and managers alike. The world of Danish and Dutch cycling may receive yet another startling doping-induced shock.
