The shortest stage of this year's Giro d'Italia ended in a small bunch sprint finish Wednesday after several BMC Racing Team riders tried to get away in the final kilometers.
Darwin Atapuma was part of a three-man move with less than 30 kilometers to go in the 134-km race and Philippe Gilbert also tried his hand with an attack in the last 10 kilometers. Sacha Modolo (Lampre-Merida) won the sprint ahead of Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek Factory Racing) as Damiano Caruso, Silvan Dillier and Gilbert finished among the group of 41 in the same time.
Caruso remained seventh overall, 9:52 behind race leader Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) with four stages to go.
