BMC Racing Team's Floris Gerts moved from fourth to third overall at the Aviva Tour of Britain Tuesday after overnight race leader Petr Vakoc (Etixx-Quick Step) was involved in a crash and lost 10 minutes.
Elia Viviani (Team Sky) won for the second time in three days as Juan José Lobato (Movistar Team) finished runner-up and assumed the race lead. Gerts placed 12th in the 216-kilometer race and is 12 seconds off the lead.
BMC Racing Team's Stefan Küng said the crash involving Vakoc was not the only scary moment.
"It was slightly downhill for the last 15 kilometers and everyone was still there – so everybody wanted to be in front," he said. "Then, we hit this cobble section and a guy nearly crashed. It was a chaotic finish, but I think in the end, the fastest guy won."
