BMC was one of the many teams that failed to bring back Petr Vakoc in today's stage of the Tour de Pologne. Despite working for Thor Hushovd in the finale, however, the team had decided to save their energy for the mountain stages.

An anticipated bunch sprint was spoiled at the Tour de Pologne Monday when Petr Vakoc (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) soloed out of a three-man breakaway to win the 226-kilometer race by 21 seconds. The BMC Racing Team worked to get former world road champion Thor Hushovd in position for the bunch sprint, Sport Director Fabio Baldato said.

"We had many guys around Thor, working for the lead out and we were waiting on the wheels of the sprinters' teams," he said. But the gap could not be closed and Vakoc took the victory by 21 seconds to assume the overall lead from Stage 1 winner Yauheni Hutarovich (Ag2r-La Mondiale).

Michael Matthews (ORICA-GreenEDGE) won the bunch sprint ahead of Boris Vallée (Lotto-Belisol) while Steve Morabito, in 16th, was the BMC Racing Team's best-placed finisher.

"I told the guys we wanted to keep quiet today and save our energy for the mountain stages," Baldato said. "The teams of the sprinters waited too long today and that gave the young rider from Omega (Vakoc) the victory."
