The 6th and final stage of the Tour of Denmark saw Tinkoff-Saxo steal the show as Michael Morkov sprinted to the stage victory and Christopher Juul-Jensen secured the overall GC win.
It would be 150km that the riders faced today with the final 60km all taking place over 10 laps through the streets of Copenhagen. After a really fast start a break of 4 riders got clear of the peloton. With the city circuits suiting the fast men it was up to the sprinters teams to lead the chase.
Bardiani, MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung and Tinkoff-Saxo were the fast teams assuming responsibility. The leaders didn’t really stand much chance with all that fire power honing in on them and the chase was timed to perfection with the race coming together with 4km to go.
There was a bit of drama before this point in the race though as a large crash took down around 11 riders. One rider that went down was Gerald Ciolek and although he could get up to continue, the race was pretty much over for the German and he could no longer assist with the sprint leadout.
Tinkoff-Saxo led it out with a full complement of riders on the front and it was their precision that paid off. Around the last corner a small gap formed which allowed Morkov to easily take the win ahead of teammate Matti Breschel while Boasson Hagen came home best of the rest in 3rd. In the overall classification, he was also the highest placed rider for the team in 6th place.
"The race was a sprint like we thought and I was feeling good for the final. Unfortunately there was a big crash in the finale and we lost some of our rhythm before the sprint. Going into the final corner the two Tinkoff riders got a gap which I tried to close but it was not possible. The team have been great all week and we rode well. Now I look ahead to next week where I will race the Arctic Race of Norway," he said.
