Guillaume Boivin (Optum) took his second Canadian road race title when he beat his teammate Ryan Andersen into second at the end of the 186.2km in Saint-Georges. The former U23 Worlds bronze medallist emerged as the fastest in a 12-rider sprint while Ryan Roth (Silber) completed the podium.
The reduced peloton caught two late race escapees Derrick St. John (Silber) and 2010 road champ William Routley (Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies), who looked like they might stay away, but with 2km to go they had to surrender. Instead, the race was decided in a sprint and here Optum had two cards to play. In the end, Boivin turned out to be faster than teammate Anderson.
Boivin was regarded as a huge talent when he won the title in 2009 before going on to claim bronze at the U23 Worlds one year later. However, since he turned professional, his progress has stalled and this year he had to step down to continental level with Optum when he wasn't retained by the Cannondale team.
Boivin takes over the title from Svein Tuft who decided not to defend his road race and time trial wins. The time trial was won by Huge Houle (Ag2r).
