Slovenian sprinter Grega Bole is one of several riders that has been left without a team following the demise of the Vacansoleil team. With no concrete offers on his hand, he fears that he may be forced to end his career earlier than planned.
With 5 professional teams folding at the end of the year, it's a tough time to be a professional cyclist and several riders are still left without a team at the end of October. One of the riders whose future is in limbo, is Grega Bole who rode for the Vacansoleil team in 2013.
The Slovenian is a versatile sprinter who climbs better than most fast finishers and even finished 2n in the 2010 Tour de Pologne. Despite a palmares that includes a win in the 2011 GP Ouest France Plouay and a stage win in the 2010 Criterum du Dauphiné, he has "no certainty for the future" and hopes to "receive some kind of offer" despite not being in "contact with any team" at the moment.
"It all depends on my manager ," he told Spaziociclismo. "I'm trying to do everything. I contacted a few people I know, but it is difficult and the answer is always that their rosters are full."
Bole turned professional with Lampre in 2010 and showed his talents by winning three races in his first year and taking that 2nd place in Poland. He left the Italian squad in 2013 to join Vacansoleil but only managed to win one race in his new colours, a stage in the Tour de l'Ain.
"I like to be a cyclist," he said. "I have devoted myself with heart and soul and hope that I can continue to do so for the next 10 years. During the years, I have had good seasons with WorldTour teams, except for the last one where I was hampered by a difficult operation. I needed a few months to recover, but at the end of the season I felt better and better and almost got back to my previous level. I would like to be part of a WorldTour team. Iam very motivated to help the team by getting good results."
Bole faced a difficult situation at the beginning of the season when his name arose in a conversation between Leonardo Bertagnolli and banned doctor Michele Ferrari, which is part of Bertagnolli's sworn statement to Italian police. According to a transcript, the two talked about Aicar, a product that works on muscular tissue and encourages the burning of fats. Bertagnolli said that it came from a Slovenian supplier, the names of several Slovenians were mentioned, with investigators noting that of Bole. Vacansoleil carried out an investigation but found nothing and allowed Bole to race.
If he is unable to find a new team, the world championships road race will have been his last professional race.
