Bardiani – CSF climber Manuel Bongiorno achieved a good result in the summit finish of Trije Kralji where he won last year. The 22nd Tour de Slovenie’s queen stage was decided on the final climb that was approached by a leading group of 35 riders that also included Edoardo Zardini.
In the steepest section with 3km to gom Bongiorno launched a first attack with Mikel Nieve. They continued together until 1.5km to go when a few chasers joined them. Here Bongiorno struggled due to new accelerations and he was dropped from the leaders, crossing the finish line in 7th.
The victory was taken by home rider Primoz Roglic who ousprinted Nieve and teammate Radoslav Rogina
”After last edition’s victory I was really confident for today. The stage was really though, a lot of climbs to cover and the rain in the second part. My teammates did a strong performance leading the main group from the start. When I attacked with 3km to go I felt my legs were not super like last year but I continued to push in front with Nieve. When other riders caught us, I didn’t have enough power to follow their attacks and I was dropped. Honestly my goal was a better result. However, I gave everything and I don’t have any regrets,” Manuel Bongiorno told.
