The Omega Pharma-Quick Step manager Patric Lefevere revealed Belgian media that several riders, including Tom Boonen, are still uncertain about their participation at the 101st edition of the Tour de France.
For the first time in its history, Omega Pharma-Quick Step lines up at the grand tour race with a team build around the general classification contender, Rigoberto Uran, in the Giro d’Italia.
It’s a well known fact, however, that it when it comes to July it will be all about Cavendish and his formidable lead-out train, while other riders in the likes of Michał Kwiatkowski or possibly Boonen will be forced to look for rather opportunistic occasions.
Lefevere revealed that so far a long-list containing fifteen manes of possible Omega Pharma-Quick Step Tour de France participants has been created, and their roster should take its final shape by the end of the Tour of Belgium, held from 27 May to 1 June.
It is understood that only Cavendish and his main lead out men have secured their spots in Belgian squad’s roster for the French grand tour, while other riders have almost a month to convince team’s management about an indispensability of their appearance in the event.
“Tom is one of the fifteen names left on the list. Six more names need to be crossed out by management towards the Tour. I think the final decision will be made by the end of the Tour of Belgium,” Lefevere told Het Nieuwsblad.
So far, Boonen participated in the Tour de France six times, winning six stages. The 33-year old Belgian returns to action at the Tour of California on Sunday.
