The Italian stage race Tirreno-Adriatico ended today with an individual time trial over 10 kilometers. Former Time Trial World Champion Fabian Cancellara (Trek) won ahead of Adriano Malori (Movistar) who won the opening time trial. Vasil Kiryienka (Sky) completed the podium. Jose Mendes crossed the line with the 35th best time and he finishes the stage race in 33rd place of the general classification. Nairo Quintana (Movistar) won the 50th edition of Tirreno-Adriatico.
“We have to conclude that we fell short of our own expectations during the race. Even though we achieved a great podium and top 10 result with Sam, we also realized that we could have done even better in both sprints. The analysis of yesterday’s finish showed that we were far away from an optimal sprint. On the other stages we were indeed represented in leading groups, but again, we do have reserves left. In the next few weeks, it is needed to implement tactical instructions even more concentrated to win”, Sport Director Enrico Poitschke concludes the race.
The majority of the BORA – ARGON 18 squad that rode Tirreno-Adriatico will also line-up on Sunday at the first WorldTour classics of the season – Milano-Sanremo.
“The race suits riders, like Sam really well. But Sam will start for the first time there and given the length of almost 300km, the race might be a bit too much for him this year. Sam should use the race to gain some experience, so we can aim to win in Sanremo in one of the upcoming years“, Poitschke looks ahead.
